Our Classroom Library
Classroom Expectations:
During the first week of school we will create our classroom rules/consequences together so that the students have ownership in their classroom. I am responsible for my students and only send them to the office when I absolutely have to. Examples of those incidences would include bullying, physical harm, and safety issues. You will be contacted if this occurs. Please keep me informed of any concerns that you have. Remember that your child may not be telling me all that they share at home.
I have high expectations. I expect EVERYONE to do their best work and show respect for others and the school. We will work a lot on how to problem solve with others, what makes a good partner, and what qualities friends show each other.
We will be implementing Responsive Classroom into our daily routine and I am expecting SUPER positive results! Responsive Classroom is all about building a classroom community where everyone feels welcome, safe, and able to learn, grow, and interact with each other.
HOMEWORK
This year 2nd graders will be getting mandatory Spelling Homework and Optional Homework. A Friday Folder will come home each week with both kinds of homework. Mandatory Spelling Homework is meant to give your child additional practice time with their spelling words. Optional homework is for those students who wish to have some school work to do over the weekend, and so families to reinforce the work we have done at school. In that Friday Folder, I will also send a newsletter & important notes home.
Please return the FOLDER by Wednesday at the latest.
Please return the FOLDER by Wednesday at the latest.
UNFINISHED CLASS WORK
If your child has work that they do not finish in class, that work will be sent home with them for homework. I will either text or call you if your child has work to complete that evening. I will also mark every paper being sent home as HOMEWORK. These papers needs to be returned to me as soon as you & your child have time to complete it.
Your child's "Fun Learning Work" will be displayed both in our classroom & in the hall! It's important for students to know their work is important.
Birthdays:
We love birthdays. When it is your child's birthday we celebrate in school. Your child will get a special birthday pencil, sticker, and get to choose a class game to play. If you wish to send in a special treat, feel free! Treats must be store bought and packaged. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May.
Reading Levels/Literacy Plan:
Each child will be placed into a leveled reader group based on their OWN reading ability. You will receive information about your child's abilities based on our Literacy Plan. There are three reading groups: Below Level (will receive intervention services based on our Literacy Plan), On Level, and Above Level. These groups change throughout the year. If a student is improving, I move them up to the next level. If they are not practicing their reading or are struggling, I will move them down. I use these leveled readers so that all students can be SUCCESSFUL. We will also be using the basal reading series, Daily 5, and CAFE.
Website:
Please access our second grade website at:
RobinMistic.weebly.com
There are also links so you can download any forms that you may have missed at the beginning of the school year on this same page as well as other pages with links to fun games and learning activities that are organized around our second grade curriculum standards. Have fun browsing!
Math Area: Each child has a tub of materials & an interactive math notebook to make math learning more hands on. Games are a great way to learn!
Snacks, Water Bottles, & Gum:
The school will provide a once daily "Quack Snacks" for your child. Your child may also bring his/her own snack. Candy, juice, and pop are not acceptable snacks. A monthly donation of a class snack would be greatly appreciated. Boxes of graham crackers, pretzels, popcorn, animal crackers, or other healthy snacks keep us from being hungry and help our brains function.
I also encourage your child to bring a water bottle to school! I will send bottles home to be washed.
Gum is allowed as long as I cannot see it or hear it. It must be spit out before we leave the room. If it becomes a distraction it will go in the trash.
Mandated Reporting:
I am a mandated reporter under Minnesota State Law. I am required to report any suspicions of neglect or wrongful treatment of a child.
Emergency Closing/End of the Day:
Our school day ends at 4:15. Please do not plan on picking up your child earlier than that unless you have an appointment or an emergency. Scheduled learning activities are planned until 4:10.
If there is anything different that your child is supposed to do at the end of the day CONTACT THE OFFICE! They will in return notify me (a note from home can be lost, but will also work, as long as it is given to me). Please don't send these requests via email, as I may not be able to check email before dismissing students. "My Mom said" will not work. You may also call or text my cell phone. 218-230-5361 If I do not answer you, I did not receive your call or message, so please call the school. 218-835-5300
Please be sure that you are signed up to be on the automated telephone service, SCHOOL REACH so that you are informed of any early closings. I will also try to contact you, but that may not always be possible. In case of evacuation, K-3 go to St. Ann's Church one block north of the school.
Our classroom has tables so your child's supplies will be stored and shared with the class
This & That:
We go on several field trips around town, most are walking trips, especially in the spring, one permission slip will cover all of these in town, walking trips. Please be sure a signed copy is turned in to me ASAP.
There is also a photo release form for you to sign. I like to submit photos of our classroom activities to the local newspaper, and at times Lakeland Public TV has been invited to our school. If there is any reason your child can NOT be a part of these photos & events please be sure that you have signed a NON-release of information.
With the increased use of technology at our school, students and parents will also need to sign a technology agreement that will be handed out and discussed at Open House. We are working to ensure students are responsible digital citizens and educate them about the responsibilities of using the internet as a tool and resource.
As of the 2013-14 school year, any parents interested in volunteering to chaperon field trips or help in classrooms MUST have a background check. This will be enforced this school year.
Our second grade school supply list includes some things that I will collect and keep for your child until s/he will need them. This is done to attempt to help keep your child’s area as uncluttered as possible, and to keep the materials from getting misplaced or spilled resulting in ruined textbooks. If you have any concerns, please contact me and I will show you when, where, and how these materials will be stored for use at a later date.
I have attached a document containing the above information and the above mentioned forms below, as well as our 2nd Grade school supply list. They may be downloaded and printed if you did not receive one or it has been misplaced.
